Find Kent County Court Records

A Kent County court record search begins with the clerk who keeps the case file. Kent County court records can include a docket, filed papers, an order, a judgment, or a certified copy. The right office depends on the case: district court, county court, or the countywide justice court each keep their own files. State tools can offer leads. Still, a call or visit to the local clerk is the surest way to confirm what exists, what copies cost, and what Texas law lets you see.

Getting Kent County Court Records

Start by naming the court. Also name the exact item you want. Craig Harrison serves as both Kent County Clerk and 39th Judicial District Clerk, a setup the Office of Court Administration calls a combo clerk. The county-clerk side handles county-level civil, criminal, probate, guardianship, and mental-health files. The district-clerk side takes district civil, criminal, family, and juvenile matters. The countywide Justice of the Peace keeps separate lower-court records.

Kent posts no official public case-search address in its county pages or the state directory. Treat that gap as a gap. It is not proof a file is missing. The courthouse counter, phone, email, fax, and mail all work as direct channels. Ask whether an office terminal or a Kent LGS/DataPoint inquiry page is open to you. re:SearchTX is a secondary state route. Local integration decides how much it covers.

  1. Identify district, county, or justice court.
  2. Give the cause number, caption or party, date span, and record type.
  3. Choose counter, phone, email, fax, mail, or a clerk-confirmed portal.
  4. Ask for search, copy, certification, delivery, and postage charges.
  5. Confirm whether the result is a docket, plain copy, certified copy, or full file.

Kent County Combo Clerk

The combo structure does not merge everything into one legal class. A request for "all court records" is too vague. Staff must guess the court, the dates, and the paper type. A focused request routes faster and avoids needless costs. Ask for a record that already exists. The clerk will not create a report or do legal research for you.

The official clerk page places the courthouse at 101 N Main Street, Jayton, Texas 79528. Mail goes to P.O. Box 9, Jayton, TX 79528. The office line is 806-237-3881. The fax is 806-237-2300, and OCA lists kcdclerk@caprock-spur.com. Call ahead. The county posts no dependable hours, holiday schedule, terminal rules, or copier terms.

Court Record Types

A docket sheet is only one part of a Kent County file. It lists dated events: filings, settings, appearances, orders, and disposition entries. The case file holds the public papers behind those entries. A calendar works differently. It lists scheduled matters and often leaves out older case history. A transcript comes from a reporter or recording system. It may sit with a separate custodian.

  • Docket sheets and chronological registers
  • Pleadings, motions, answers, and filed attachments
  • Signed orders, judgments, dismissals, and dispositions
  • County and district criminal, civil, family, and probate files
  • Justice-court citation files and certified dispositions
  • Transcripts or records of proceedings

Not everything in a file is open. Juvenile material, sealed filings, protected data, and some child-protection records can be withheld or redacted. If the full paper cannot be released, ask whether a public version exists.

Kent Records, Two Court Centers

The 39th Judicial District spans Haskell, Kent, Stonewall, and Throckmorton counties. A Kent filing may sit with the combo clerk in Jayton while the district judge's main administrative address sits in Haskell. Seeing both towns is normal, not an error. It simply reflects a four-county court.

For a district file, ask whether inspection happens in Jayton, whether the record is digitized in LGS, and whether a setting must be checked through Haskell. For county court, use the county-clerk role. For justice court, contact that court directly. The Texas Judicial Directory confirms contacts, though it holds no case files.

Inside a Kent County Court Record

Kent has no public endpoint or demonstration docket to browse. The inventory below rests on the statewide guide. It does not promise that every field or paper is online for every Kent case. Treat it as a request checklist. Verify the returned file with its custodian.

Kent Court Records Portal Gap

OCA identifies Local Government Solutions as Kent's case-management vendor. LGS lists scanning, viewing, public inquiry, hosting, reporting, and eFileTexas links as product abilities. That does not show which features Kent actually uses or which case types are public. A vendor name is not a search link.

The official state search page lets users choose Cases or Hearings, open Advanced Search, pick a Search By field, and sort results. Some tools require registration. A court may charge for a document. A result is a lead. A blank result is not a certificate that Kent has no file.

That screen is a statewide layer, not a Kent database. Write down the filters you used, and give them to the combo clerk if coverage or a document stays unclear.

Fees and Certified Copies

A plain copy just reproduces an available paper. A certified copy carries the clerk's certification that it is a true copy of the filed record. Another court or agency may require certification, so confirm what the receiver needs. A transcript is separate from both.

Kent posts 2024 schedules on its fee page. The indexed General Fees text includes a $5 per-page general record-search code. That figure may not apply to every copy. The page does not settle plain-copy, certification, scan, postage, or email-delivery prices for every case file. Ask the clerk for an exact quote.

Kent Judicial Record Request Timing

Texas keeps judiciary information on its own track. Under Government Code Section 552.0035, that information is governed by Supreme Court rules or other law. Labeling your request a Texas Public Information Act request changes nothing. Court rules still control.

Rule of Judicial Administration 12 governs qualifying judicial records, definitions and exceptions included. Your written request must name an existing record and go to the custodian. Rule 12.6 sets the clock. Access comes as soon as practicable. It is no later than 14 days after actual receipt when the record is available. Otherwise the office sends written notice with a reasonable production date. You never have to state a purpose. Clerk-held case files can fall under other law, so take the custodian's stated route.

Ask for what exists: Give the court, cause number or caption, date range, and exact docket, order, or filing. Rule 12 does not require a new report.

Sealed Records and Public Access

Public access has limits. Texas Rule of Civil Procedure 76a governs sealing, and Rule 21c governs redaction of sensitive data. Family Code Chapter 58 restricts juvenile records. The 39th District also issued a 2025 order limiting access to Department of Family and Protective Services records under confidentiality law.

When part of a Kent County court record is closed, ask three things. Is the docket itself still public? Can a redacted copy be released? What rule or order covers the withheld portion? A paper missing from the online index may sit on file in paper form, outside the public index, behind a fee, or with another custodian. Rule 12.9 offers a review route for denials within its scope, generally within 30 days.

Texas access rules: Government Code § 552.0035 preserves judiciary rules, while the Rules of Judicial Administration state the Rule 12 process.

Kent Court Records Mail Checklist

A mailed or emailed Kent County court records request should name the court. Say whether it is district, county, or justice. Give the full cause number, the public caption or party spelling, an approximate date, and the exact paper you need. Before copies are made, ask about the fee. Also ask about payment method, delivery charge, any redactions, and any legal ground for withholding.

Keep your copy and proof of delivery. If staff points you to another custodian, write down the office and the date. A case may first surface through the Kent County Case Lookup. The clerk's copy is the authoritative record.

Do not use a probate, marriage, filing, or portal price as a substitute for an unverified court-copy fee.
